I love community sooooooooo much. my mom is my first spelman sister.

because of the subculture of competition, i know a flourishing sisterhood is not every spelman student’s experience. through nurturing community, i aspire to ensure every spelman student feels communally involved and supported. and if you feel as though you are still in search of your spelman community, i will be your first sister <3

community has been a centerpiece to my life. i was raised to appreciate black community/culture, my immediate and extended family are devoted to maintaining our community, and i have 2 siblings.

additionally, my mom went to spelman (c’95). It was here that she met her lifelong besties who are now my aunts. Having always looked up to them and the community they have, i decided i would go to spelman at 10 years old, because i too wanted friends for sisters.

coming to spelman means coming to an environment where everyone was the top of their class in highschool. I think this may contribute to a culture of competition, and feeling a need to compete as opposed to supporting each other.

although i came to spelman knowing community, i found that this community was different. it has its own beautiful uniqueness from all the communities i’ve known up until this point. i’ve built relationships that have taught me so much about myself and have filled me with so much gratitude. without a doubt, sisterhood is prevalent on campus. however, sometimes there’s a shift from sister to competitor.
