Through servant leadership, I aim not only be of service to you and the college, but also encourage you to identify what servant leadership looks like for you. Take a leap and know that if no one else, I’ve got you. Be encouraged to seek relationships with unique and like-minded individuals who will help foster your growth as you help foster theirs. “A Choice to Change the World” starts on campus, but I understand that it isn’t easy to do alone (and you shouldn’t!). Know that I’m backing you and supporting you all the way.

Servant leadership is essentially about 3 things: Listening, learning, and courage.

Leadership isn’t always easy, it definitely hasn’t always been for me. While courage can be conjured internally, at Spelman College, where community exist as a centerpiece, encouragement should also be felt externally.

I was insecure about the possibilities of my impact when I came into Spelman. I was worried about how well I would perform and instead of encouraging myself through seeing the amazing accomplishments of other students, I resorted to being fearful. Which led to unnecessary anxiety and stress.

I ended up stepping out on a leap of faith and finding this community later, which aided me in thinking about the “what if?” as opposed to “what happens when things go wrong?”. This helped foster my curiosity for how high I could jump. My perspective has shifted, so I now can appreciate that the anxiety wasn’t neccessary, but I don’t want this to be any other student’s reality.

While I placed these insecurities on myself, I believe if I had a community to validate my ideas and skills, I would’ve never doubted myself in the first place.
